Are You Leaving Tuition Assistance on the Table?

Written by EPCE | 05/29/2026

Did you know that while many employers offer education benefits, only a small percentage of employees actually use them?

Recent studies show that 92% of U.S. organizations offer some form of education benefit, such as tuition reimbursement or tuition assistance. Yet average participation rates often remain below 5% of eligible employees.

That means one of the most valuable workplace benefits may be one of the most overlooked.

Why Employees Don’t Use Tuition Benefits

If your company offers tuition support, but you have never used it, you are not alone. Common reasons include:

  • Not realizing the benefit exists.
  • Believing it does not apply to your role or career goals.
  • Not knowing where to start.
  • Thinking there is not enough time to balance work and school.
  • Concern about paying upfront costs first.

Education Can Look Different Today

Continuing your education can be flexible, affordable, and career-focused. It may include:

  • Taking one course to build expertise.
  • Completing a certificate program.
  • Earning an industry credential.
  • Finishing an associate, bachelor’s, or graduate degree.
  • Upskilling in leadership, technology, project management, or operations.

For working adults, learning often happens one step at a time.

Why It Matters

Employees who continue learning often position themselves for:

  • Promotions and advancement.
  • Higher earning potential.
  • New career pathways.
  • Greater confidence and job satisfaction.
  • Increased long-term career security.

First Step: Ask HR

If you are unsure whether your company offers tuition support, start by asking your HR department or manager.

Helpful questions to ask:

  • Does your company offer tuition assistance or tuition reimbursement?
  • What is the annual maximum benefit amount?
  • Are books or fees included?
  • Are certain schools or programs preferred?
  • Is manager approval required?
  • Do I need to stay employed for a certain period after using the benefit?
  • Can the benefit be used for certificates or individual courses?

Veterans: Additional Funding May Be Available

If you are a veteran or active military member, you may also qualify for education funding through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs GI Bill® or other military education benefits. These resources may be combined with employer benefits depending on eligibility.
